Ralph as i knew him

Created by Philip one year ago
I first met Ralph Davies in the mid 50’s when he was starting his teaching career in Newport, Gwent and dating my sister Jean who he met at a confectionary shop at the bottom of Stowe Hill. It was obvious he was well educated and he mixed in with the Morgans who were working class and lived in an area known as the “Gaer” which is Welsh for fort. During the courtship I visited Aberdare a number of times which was a coal mining working class town and met his mother, father and other family members. All were pleasant people and it was interesting to see how they lived as this was the heartland of South Wales at a time coal mining was the only industry. At some point Jean and Ralph married and moved to London where he starting teaching. My parents visited London often and we stayed at rooming houses and spent time with Jean and Ralph as well as sight seeing. As Ralph’s career progressed he acquired a car which was the start of a interest that flourished all his life. They then started visiting Newport during the school summer holidays by driving down and visiting many sites in Wales, castles, beaches and other attractions. In fact one popular site was Llangrannog, Cardiganshire which was on the west coast of Wales and Vera the wealthy sister of my mother through marriage had a pub, The Ship hotel and a restaurant. I was lucky that my young age around 8 allowed me to tag along on many of these trips. Later when Ralph and Jean moved to Welwyn Garden City I often went to Brands Hatch and even Silverstone to watch the motor racing and sometimes Ralph took part in timed trials with his own car. In fact I often stayed with Jean and Ralph in Codicote as I was going to college in Croydon and later working in Watford which was near by. That is where Hillary and Petra arrived after adoption and finally Gareth arrived biologically later. By now Ralph was a Head Master and in a successful career and he always treated my sister and the children well and with respect so it was a successful marriage.
Codicote is where I brought my present wife Doris for evaluation by Jean and Ralph and my mother who was staying over. Needless to say they approved of my Austrian wife to be and in fact Jean and Ralph some years later drove to Kennelbach in Austria and spent time with us and the family of Doris. Ralph also  visited us a few times in Montreal in the late 1990’s after my sister had passed away in 1995. On one of these trips we flew to Orlando, Florida with Ralph and our three children and had an enjoyable memorable time in a house we rented. There was one other reunion when Ralph passed through Montreal on a North American holiday excursion and we picked him up at the hotel and he spent the evening with us. This was the last time we saw Ralph and only communicated by letter there after.
Ralph will always be fondly remembered and I have included him on the Family Tree at Ancestry.ca
